Choosing Cushion Thickness and Fill

The right cushion thickness depends on your furniture, available space and preferred feel. There is no single thickness that suits every window seat, bench or couch. Start with the seating area and compare the options on the exact product you plan to order.

Check your finished sitting height

Measure the furniture without its cushion. Consider how the chosen cushion height will change your sitting position, armrest height and space under a dining table. Cushion filling compresses in use; a listed thickness is not a promise of an identical compressed sitting height.

Plan for your type of seating

• Dining benches and banquettes: check legroom beneath the table and access to nearby storage.
• Window seats: check window trim, sill height and any doors or lids that need to open.
• Sofas: compare seat and back dimensions separately. Replacing only one cushion may change the feel beside the others.

Compare the actual fill choices

Use the filling options and descriptions on your selected product. Different constructions can feel and recover differently; a familiar name alone does not establish firmness, density or suitability for your project. Ask us about the available fill if you want a particular feel or are trying to match an existing cushion.

Do not assume all products offer the same filling or that a replacement cover includes filling. For a cover-only order, your existing insert determines much of the finished feel.

Thickness also affects the cover

A replacement cover must match the insert's shape and dimensions, including thickness. If the insert has flattened, become misshapen or no longer provides the comfort you want, consider a complete replacement cushion rather than changing the cover alone.

Before you order

1. Record your furniture and insert measurements with our measuring guide.
2. Check the available thickness and fill selections on the product.
3. Compare fabric swatches for your room.
4. Ask our team about an unusual shape, a required firmness or a dimension outside the selector.
